PROTECT YOUR PETS
The most common intestinal parasite is probably the round worm.   Round worm eggs are excreted in the feces of dogs and cats and are transmitted to other animals when they come into contact with it.   They can also be passed through the placenta to puppies before they are born.

Once an egg enters the pets body the adult worm lives in the intestines and feeds off the food the dog or cat has eaten.   They can cause diarrhea, vomiting and the pot belly seen in many young puppies.

Round worms are very prolific and a large number of worms can develop in a very short period.   The female can lay up to 200,000 eggs every day!
common worm found in     pets is the tape worm.   Tape worms are long segmented worms carried by fleas.   These worms also live in the intestines where they feed on the   nutrients the animal eats.

Tape worms are one of the few parasites that may be seen in a bowel movement or even clinging to the hair near your pets tail. These may appear like pieces of moving rice. This is usually a segment or piece of a worm that has broken off an adult worm still living inside the animal.
HOOK WORMS & WHIP WORMS

These infestations may be more serious and often can be fatal.   Pets become infested with these worms after coming into contact with contaminated soil or other animals. The larvae of Hook worms can even penetrate the skin directly.

After entering the body, the worm matures in the intestines.
and attaches to its’ lining where they feed by sucking blood from their host.   As the worms feed they secrete an anticoagulant into the bite that prevents it from clotting   causing a black tarry looking stool A heavy infestation of hook or whip worms can lead to severe anemia and possible death
It is important to treat pets infested with any type worm because many of them can be transmitted to humans! Round worms and hook worms do not mature in the intestines of humans like they do in pets. These worms only remain in the intestines of humans a short time. As immature larvae they migrate through the tissues of the body and can cause severe liver and lung damage, skin rashes, permanent neurological damage and even blindness.

The best way to prevent a parasitic infestation of worms is to have your pet tested and treated for worms on a routine basis. Since children are at the greatest risk, its important to teach them to properly wash their hands after playing with a pet and to wear shoes while outside.
